How to Choose a Portable Vacuum for Metal Dust Extraction

In any workplace, dust is hazardous to health. However, some dust poses more than an inhalation risk; it could start a fire, or even cause an explosion. Metallic dusts, such as aluminium, titanium and magnesium, are quick to ignite when finely divided. Even non-combustible materials can become susceptible when airborne, which is why it’s important to invest in dust extraction equipment.

Combustible dust could be ignited if there was a spark, open flame (even from a cigarette), radiation, heat, static or a lightning strike. This could cause an explosion or a fire. While some of these causes may seem unlikely, you must assess the risk in normal operating conditions. Where there is any risk, you will need a metal dust extraction system to contain the dust and render it inert.

Understanding ATEX Directives

dynabrade-61462The European Union has published two directives about dealing with an ‘explosive atmosphere’, known as ATEX Directives. The directives define different environments as zones, according to the size of the space, its characteristics, and the likelihood of an explosion. It is a rough equivalent to the HAZLOC system used in the USA.

Metal dust extraction equipment is marked with a category number, plus the letter ‘D’ for dust. There are three different zone definitions that you’ll need to be aware of when looking for the right category of ATEX certified metal dust extraction equipment:

  • Zone 20 describes a very high risk of explosion from a cloud of dust, where the risk is continuous or long-term; you will need Category 1 equipment
  • Zone 21 describes an area where dust is likely to create an explosive mixture occasionally; you will require Category 2 equipment
  • Zone 22 describes an area where an explosive mixture is unlikely, or would only exist for a short time; for this zone, you will require Category 3 equipment

There are some situations where Category 1 equipment can be used in Zone 21, and where Category 1 or 2 equipment can be used in Zone 22. Consult the Health and Safety Executive for guidance on your specific circumstances.

Understanding Atmosphere Ratings

Different metal dust extraction machines are designed for different substances, with three specific Groups relating to dust extraction. It’s important to check that the machine you want to buy is rated for the type of dust you are working with:

  • Group E: Combustible metal dust
  • Group F: Combustible dusts from carbon-based materials such as coal and charcoal
  • Group G: Wood, plastic and other combustible dusts not covered in category E or F

Many machines cover more than one Group; some are suitable for general usage. Check the product description carefully, and consult the manufacturer’s manual for guidance on each Group.

How Metal Dust Extraction Machines Work

Metal dust extractors contain and remove dust using a vacuum and a tank. The tank contains liquid to contain the collected dust. Depending on the machine, the liquid will normally be water, paraffin oil or mineral oil.

A metal dust extraction machine can hold between 2kg and 10kg of dust in up to 30 litres of liquid. The tank on most machines is detachable for simple disposal; some units have a disposable or reinforced bag, although this is optional.

Machines can be electric, or pneumatic. Pneumatic machines are advisable for hazardous environments where sparks may ignite airborne dust. Additionally, when choosing a metal dust extraction machine, make sure you choose the correct type of capture: dry or wet. Dry is for use with ordinary sanders and grinders, while wet capture equipment is for tools with a water feed. For general purpose, you can purchase machines that dispose of both wet and dry dust.

Some dry metal dust extraction machines have a coalescing filter element (CFE) fitted. These filter elements remove moisture from the captured material.

Metal Dust Extraction Machine Features

Some machines are legally certified in their ability to dissipate static electricity, and have a conductive case for safety; others are non-conductive for general purpose use. Some machines allow the connection of two tools simultaneously; ideal if you are working in a small space. While these machines vary considerably in size, the cart allows them to be moved freely. Manufacturers also offer ‘backpack style’ portable vacuums that are worn on the body for convenience, as well as machines that can be mounted on a wall or another cart. These machines are smaller and lighter than the models on wheels, and can be used with a bag for simple disposal.

Emery Cloth on Lathes and Polishing Lathes

If your business uses metalworking lathes, you need to be aware of a new guidance document from the Health and Safety Executive in the UK. Specifically, it refers to emery cloth on lathes and polishing lathes, and the tragic accidents that have occurred as a result of their use.

Emery cloth on lathes are used to deburr and polish metal as it spins, but operators sometimes use dangerous processes and risk serious injury or death. Putting items into a machine by hand carries significant risk, and many operators have broken bones or worse.

Due to the considerable risk of accident, it’s time to rethink your process and keep your workers safer, and this means discontinuing the use of emery cloths and replacing your machinery with Dynabrade alternatives.

The Dangers of Using Emery Cloth on Lathes and Polishing Lathes

Metalworkers use emery cloth on lathes and polishing lathes to polish their product. In the past, this meant wrapping cloth around the machinery as it turns, and holding the other end by hand.

This was thought to be the best way to maintain high tension against the metal being finished. But it can can result in the operator’s hand being pulled into the lathe when the emery cloth snags, or becomes entangled. This injury happens incredibly quickly, and gives the operator no chance to react before disaster occurs.

Simply wearing gloves is not an acceptable way to protect the hands, and will not prevent broken fingers or permanent damage to the arm.

Additionally, this manual process puts the operator’s body dangerously close to the machine. Operators can be at further risk if they have long hair or are wearing loose clothing, such as a baggy t-shirt. In this scenario, the risk is that a foreign object is pulled into the lathe as it spins, pulling the body towards it. Bracelets, pendants and other items of jewellery work on the hands can pose particular hazards.

To be compliant, all businesses using emery cloth on lathes or polishing lathes must carry out an immediate risk assessment. The Health and Safety Executive says that the use of these lathes should be discontinued. Your workers must use another method now. If you do not, your best option is to skip the finishing process entirely.

  • Emery cloths should be immediately phased out

  • If any operator is observed working in an unsafe manner, they should be stopped and retrained

The Range of Dynabrade Die Grinders

Dynabrade’s 1hp Die Grinder is available in different RPM speeds, from 950 scaling up to 20,000. Gearless and geared versions are available. All models in this category have a rear exhaust and a 1/ 4” collet. Select a model with or without an extension.

There are two Dynabrade .5 hp 7 degree die grinders. The first is model 52218, a 20,000 RPM grinder with a long handle and front exhaust. This model has a 1/4 “ collet and an offset shape, and is gearless for reduced wear and maintenance. The second .5 hp Die Grinder is available in four different RPM speeds, in offset or straight line designs, and with a front or rear exhaust.

Pencil Grinders

Dynabrade Pencil Grinders have a variable speed control, allowing the operator to adjust the RPM from 35,000 up to 60,000. Model 52850 has a 1/8” collet, while model 52855 has a 3mm collet. All models have been designed for long life, and have an ergonomic form factor and insulation to reduce fatigue.

There is also a rotary vane air motor variant (models 52861 to 52864), which offers adjustable speed from 5,000 to 25,000 RPM. This makes it incredibly versatile, and it’s simple to use, with a rotary control to select the speed. Model 51730 is a turbine-driven air motor die grinder with ceramic bearings. This design provides exceptional heat and wear resistance, and is available in four different speeds: 35,000, 50,000, 60,000 or 100,000 RPM. Other models are available in this range, giving you the choice of collet size, bearing type and extension length.

The Dynabrade Central Vacuum Pencil Grinder has an air motor driven by a turbine. It has no gears, so the wear is greatly reduced and there is no need to oil the machine. This grinder comes with red, gold or teal tool caps in 35,000, 50,000 or 60,000 RPM. Models have a 1/8” or 3mm collet.

These .4 hp extension, 25,000 RPM Extension Die Grinders allow for intricate work in hard to reach places. Choose from 3” or 6” extension with a 4 piece collet. Models in this range come with a front or rear exhaust, according to your requirements.

Vacuum Die Grinders

The Vacuum-Ready Dynabrade Die Grinder allows you efficiently remove waste material in an instant. It has a vaccum sleeve that can be quickly adjusted to fit, or removed entirely if preferred. Choose from a central or right angle vacuum, and .4 hp, .7 hp or 1 hp. Most models in this range are gearless; the 56715 and 56719 are geared. Dynabelter

The Dynabelter is ideal for weld grinding and finishing on metals, wood, plastic, stone and composites. There are three models in the Dynabelter range, from 0.7hp through to 2.0hp, allowing you to choose a heavy duty variant for more aggressive work. Note that the 2.0hp model takes wider abrasive belts.

The Dynabelter Finisher is a Dynabrade belt sander designed for finishing. It offers 0.7hp at 18,000 RPM, and has a front exhaust with a 3/8” hose. The Dynabelter takes 1” x 60” abrasive belts.

Pipe Belt Finisher

Dynabrade’s air-powered pipe belt finisher is designed to finish curved surfaces. The unique design allows the abrasive belt to make contact with a large surface area, speeding up the sanding process. The tool has an adjustable side handle, and a tension arm to make belt changes fast and simple. The air-powered Dynabrade belt finisher also has an extended rear exhaust with a muffler to reduce noise levels.

Dynafile

The original Dynafile is a Dynabrade belt sander is internationally believed to be the best in its class. The Dynafile was launched as a direct replacement for manual sanding, and its composite belt guard makes it incredibly easy to use. The Dynafile uses 24″ belts and includes a 11218 Contact Arm, or there is also the Versatility Kit which contains five different arms and various abrasives.

Dynafile II

The Dynabrade Dynafile II belt sander is a compact model available in either pneumatic or electric variations, and ideal for working in a confined area. This versatile tool can be used on a variety of materials and has a 360-degree pivoting head and an ergonomic offset handle.

The Dynafile II can also be converted into a die grinder or drill. To use the tool for either purpose, you will need to purchase a suitable collet or chuck. Both are sold separately, and can be purchased from us here at Dynashop.

There’s also a vacuum version of the Dynafile II, which includes an integrated vacuum that can be moved around easily while you work. The dust collection features an innovated double bag system. The vacuum Dynafile II operates at 20,000 RPM and 0.5hp.

If you prefer not to use air-powered Dynabrade belt sanders, there is also an electric Dynafile II which is available with 110V or 240V variants. This tool is available in a Versatility Kit.

Dynafile III

The Dynabrade belt sander range includes the Dynafile III, a tool designed for deburring and blending, and removing welds. It’s built using the same design principles as the Dynafile II, but with a higher 0.7hp rating.

Mini-Dynafile II

The Mini-Dynafile II is a smaller Dynabrade belt sander. The range includes the base Mini-Dynafile II, as well as a vacuum version.

The Mini-Dynafile II is designed for superb manoeuvrability, and has all of the features you’d expect from a robust Dynabrade belt sander in a smaller, more compact body. It has a 360-degree pivoting head, a read exhaust, detachable belt guard and 7-degree offset handle. This tool comes with a contact arm for ½” x 12” abrasive belts.

You can purchase the Mini-Dynafile II in a Versatility Kit with a drive wheel, contact arm, case and nylon belts. This tool can also be used as a die grinder when used with the threaded collet included in the Versatility kit.

The vacuum Mini-Dynafile II operates at 0.4hp and 25,000 RPM, with a rear exhaust. It can be connected to a portable vacuum system (sold separately from us at Dynashop), or an external vacuum. This model can be used with any accessory from the Mini-Dynafile I range, and it can be used for grinding and finishing composites, as well as general purpose use.

Dynangle and Dynangle II

The original Dynangle is a belt sander designed for precise control and restricted spaces. It can be used with any Dynangle contact arm.

Grinder Safety Features

All of the Dynabrade grinders sold through Dynashop come with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects, plus important safety features. The guards on the grinders are an integral part of the tool, and must be correctly attached for the tool to power on. Additionally, all Dynabrade grinders have a safety lock throttle lever.

Dynabrade Grinders / Polishers

The Dynabrade Wet Polisher is a right angle grinder designed for finishing work surfaces. It has a variable speed control from 500 to 3,600 RPM, and is sealed to prevent corrosion. The water feed line is built into the handle and does not interfere with grip. There’s also an adjustable side handle for comfortable operation.

Depressed Centre Wheel Dynabrade Grinders

Dynabrade grinders come in three types: Type 27, Type 11 and Type 1. Dynashop also stocks cone or plug wheel Dynabrade grinders with various extension handles. All pads, wheels and accessories made by Dynabrade are stocked by Dynashop in the UK.

Type 27

The range of Dynabrade grinders includes the Type 27 0.7hp grinder which can be purchased in six different variants: choose a 3” or 4” head; 13,500, 12,000 or 18,000 RPM speed; and select from two different head/body combinations. For general use, the composite model has a lightweight aluminium head, while the heavy duty steel body model has a durable steel head.

The 3hp, 9” Dynabrade grinder has a gearless air motor, resulting in better uptime and fewer wearable parts. It takes a 230mm Type 27 grinding wheel (not included) and has an adjustable, insulated handle. The overspeed shut-off feature ensures that the grinder cuts out if the RPM exceeds the rated speed; the grinder must be serviced before it can be used again.

Dynabrade’s 3hp & 4hp horizontal models come in 4,500 RPM and 6,000 RPM variants. All three versions have an adjustable handle, and exhaust is positioned on the side. We recommend that this grinder is used with a whip hose, which we sell separately.

·Dynabrade also offers a 2” and 3” diameter depressed centre wheel grinders with a right angle design. Both the 2” model and 3” model offer 0.4hp (with 0.55hp model available in the 3”) and a rear exhaust, with a compact muffler shape. Dynashop offers the 2” grinders in 12,000, 15,000 and 20,000 RPM, and the 3” in 15,000 RPM with geared or gearless motor and a removable side handle. If you need this grinder for left or right handled use, we recommend models 57767 or 54783. For comfort, there is also a 7 degree offset model; 52700, which can be converted to a die grinder or drill.

There also 4” diameter,4.5” diameter and 5” diameter centre Dynabrade grinders in the depressed centre wheel range, offering 1hp, 1.3hp and 0.7hp respectively. The 4” model has a rear muffler and can be used left or right handed.

At the larger end of the scale, there are two 7” depressed centre wheel Dynabrade grinders with right angle design. The first has 2hp and 3hp variants. Each variant has three different models, offering 6,000 to 8,500 RPM. The second comes in a 1.2hp or 2hp model and includes an adaptor kit for optional Type 27 wheel use.

Type 1

Type 1 Dynabrade grinders come in 3” and 4” variants with a cushioned grip and rear exhaust. The 3” model comes in 12,000, 15,000 and 18,000 RPM variants with a 6” extension. The 4” model comes with or without the extension in 12,000 and 15,000 RPM variants. The 6” version of the Type 1 grinder has a right angled design.

Type 11

The Dynabrade grinder range features a Type 11 cup wheel grinder with a 6” wheel. This grinder
has a gearless air motor and insulated adjustable handle.

Cone or Plug Wheel Grinders

Dynabrade’s grinder range includes an assortment of cone and plug wheel grinders, with various attachments. These are ideal for use in foundries and shipyards, or for buffing and polishing work. Composite and steel variants are

Dynabrade orbital sanders are available in a range of orbit diameters and pad sizes. The smaller the orbit and pad, the finer the finish will be. The larger the orbit, the more quickly you can work, and the more forceful the motion will be. For the best possible finish, a wet sander is the perfect choice.

Remember that a smaller orbital sander is better for tight curves, and you may have difficulty working with contoured surfaces if the orbit and pad are too large.

Dynabrade Orbital Sander Types

In this article, we’ll briefly run through the characteristics of each Dynabrade orbital sander. For clarification, click through to the individual product pages.

The Dynorbital Range

The 11” diameter Dynorbital sander features an air-powered motor capable of 2,500 RPM. Dynashop sells an optional side handle for this tool, which facilitates firm control and grip. Non-vacuum and central vacuum versions are available.

There is also a two-handed version of the Dynorbital, which is ideal for vertical use. The unit is available with or without a vacuum (self generated, or via a central hose). Different pad sizes and orbits are available, and models are available in 10,000 RPM and 12,000 RPM.

The Dynorbital Supreme is a flagship model in the D3 range, which boasts the highest RPM in the industry. It’s designed for the ultimate in comfortable use, with a contoured handle and insulation to stop the cold air from the vacuum being transferred to the operator’s hand.

The Wet Dynorbital Supreme is ideal for operators who apply water using a spray or nozzle. The machine does not have a water feed built in, and it also has a protective shield to minimise spray. Purchase it in Basic or Supreme versions, with a 3/16” orbit and 5mm diameter pad, or a 3/32” orbit and 2.5mm pad.

The Dynabrade orbital sander range also includes a Silver Supreme D3 model, a very modern take on the orbital sander design. Manufactured in steel, this sander has a patented, ergonomic grip with comfortable recessed lever, and is compact and manoeuvrable.

The Spirit Range

The range of Dynabrade orbital sanders includes the Dynorbital Spirit, an extremely compact and lightweight machine ideal for operators who find large sanders difficult to control. This key Dynabrade orbital sander can be used with or without vacuum, and is available in dozens of size and RPM combinations.

There’s also a HiVac version of the Spirit, which offers improved dust collection with fine sanding. It can be ordered with a 3/16” or 3/32” pad, and collects dust through the pad itself. It weighs the same as the Mini-Dynorbital below; just 1.3lbs (600g).

The Mini-Dynorbital Range

Dynabrade has repackaged its orbital sander into a tiny palm-sized form factor, giving users precise control and the ability to finish intricate shapes.

The Silver Supreme model weighs a miniscule 1.3lbs (600g), making it comfortable to work with and easy to manoeuvre. This grinder comes with a storage bracket and pad.

The Supreme Mini-Dynorbital is available in 5,000 RPM and 7,500 RPM models for intricate jobs and the repair of small defects.

The range of small Dynabrade orbital sanders features an offset model, which is sold on its own or with a number of accessories. This package is called the Versatility Kit, and includes two sanders, a 1 /4” die grinder and a 3 1/ 2” disc sander.

There is also a right-angle Mini-Dynorbital Dynabrade orbital sander that is packaged with a micro-finishing film disc. All additional discs and accessories are available through Dynashop in the UK. The Angle-Head Mini Dynorbital completes the range, providing the flexibility of a right-angled design with the convenience of an extended rear exhaust. It’s available on its own, or in two different Versatility Kits.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Dynabrade D3 Random Orbital Sander

There are generally four different aspects you need to consider when choosing a Dynabrade random orbital sander.

Dynabrade D3’s

Durability – how heavy-duty is the work you will be using your Dynabrade random orbital sander for?

The D3 range of Dynabrade random orbital sanders primarily offer three ranges at different price levels, these being the Dynorbital Spirit, Dynorbital Silver Supreme and Dynorbital Supreme. The lowest tier is the Dynabrade Dynorbital Spirit, which is hands-down one of the best random orbital sanders on the market. Built for less intensive, light-to-medium-duty applications and for users with smaller hands, this sander is ideal for vertical and contoured applications. The Dynabrade Dynorbital Silver Supreme is intended for the middle of the market; incorporating the ergonomics of the Spirit, it offers the perfect combination of supreme power and lightweight comfort. The Dynabrade Dynorbital Supreme is the premium range, offering the best performance and durability; the ergonomics of the aforementioned models have been improved even further, and there are also increased vacuum capabilities. Impressively, the Supreme also maintains the highest RPM in the industry while operating on a work surface.

Dust extraction – do you need to extract potentially dangerous dust particles?

Dust extraction is becoming more popular due to the improvement in health and safety lesiglation in regards to protecting users from harmful dust. Random orbital sanders offer three different options in regards to dust extraction: non-vacuum, self-generated vacuum and central vacuum. Non-vacuum models offer no extraction at all; any dust which is produced will remain on the work surface and in the air, meaning likely inhalation by the user. Long-term exposure to dust particles produced by working on surfaces such as wood, metals, etc. can result in lung cancer, asthma and even COPD (source: HSE.) It is therefore recommended that customers purchase either self-generated or central vacuum models. Self-generated dust extraction involves attaching a reusable bag to the tool, with dust particles produced during sanding being extracted into the bag. This requires emptying the bag once it is close to capacity but generally protects the user from dust inhalation, as it is extracted as soon as it is produced. Central vacuum is the most efficient option, with the tool being attached to a central vacuum system via a hose and the dust being sucked away similarly to a hoover, offering the most protection to the user.

Pad size – how big does your Dynabrade random orbital need to be?

Dynabrade Dynorbital Sanders offer pad sizes between 3 – 11″ diameter, with the Spirit, Silver Supreme and Supreme coming in 3 – 6″ varieties. A larger pad size offers a higher surface area, quicker sanding, and in turn, faster job completion. However, a larger pad size is not always the best option; you must also take into consideration the surface on which the sander is likely to be used and whether a smaller diameter would be more beneficial, for example when sanding in intricate grooves and contours where a larger sander would be too bulky.

Orbit – how fine is the finish you require?

Orbit Levers

The orbit is the motion the sander produces when in use; a random orbital sander simultaneously spins the abrasive disc and moves it in an ellipse. These “random” movements minimise the chance of sanding over recently sanded areas, and therefore help to prevent the resulting swirl patterns while also leaving a smooth finish. Dynabrade random orbital sanders come in various orbits, but the most common options are 2.5mm, 5mm and 10mm, with a smaller orbit providing a finer finish, while a larger orbit (for example 10mm) will sand more aggressively.

There are therefore a variety of different options when choosing a Dynabrade random orbital sander, or any ROS in general, and it essentially comes down to the user, the application and the abrasive – no sander is perfect for every job. However, it is strongly recommended that you purchase a model with some form of dust extraction, as this will improve working conditions for the user and also improve efficiency as considerably less time will be spent cleaning up dust resulting from using a non-vacuum tool.

Our Range of Dynabrade Sanders

The Dynabrade sander range spans five main product types: the Dynastraight, Dyninger, Dynisher, Denibber and Rolling Pin Sander.

The Dynastraight

The Dynastraight is an air-powered finishing tool, available in a variety of models for a wide type of sanding applications.

The range starts with model 13200, a 950 RPM, .7hp sander, and goes all the way up to the model 13519, a 6,000 RPM, 1ph sander. Some models have a cushioned grip and/or an air chuck.

Some Dynastraights come with extension pieces, but the Dynacushion wheels are sold separately unless you purchase a Versatility Kit. Please take care to choose the correct diameter bore; ask DynaShop for guidance if you are not sure which wheels are compatible with your Dynabrade sander.

There is also a Lightweight Dynastraight with a lower .4hp rating. The lightweight version is perfect for long use and awkward work access.

The Dynastraight Flapper is a finishing and polishing tool that is used with abrasive flap wheels (sold separately). This tool has a front exhaust, lever throttle, and adjustable speed control. Choose a model with or without an extension and adapter.

The Dyninger

The Dynabrade Dyninger is designed or working on areas that are hard to reach, as well as general finishing and blending. Instead of wheels, this tool is fitted with up to 6 sanding stars. The Dyninger has an extended rear exhaust design. The abrasive stars are sold separately. You can also purchase a Versatility Kit to receive the stars, Dynabrade sander and accessories in one package.

 

 

The Lightweight Dyninger can be used for sealer sanding, metal deburring or composite finishing. Use with spindle mount, Arbor mount and eyelet sanding stars. This tool comes with an air-flow control Dynaswivel fitting that gives the user fine control.

The Dynisher

The Dynabrade Dynisher is an air-powered Dynabrade sander. It leaves an attractive patterned finish on metal. It has a guard that can be turned around, allowing the operator to work close to a wall. The Dynisher comes with an Arbor mounting and can be used with a Dynabrade pneumatic wheel (sold separately).

The Mini Dynisher is the smallest version of the Dynisher, ideal for working on contoured surfaces and achieving a superb finish on metal surfaces. This Dynabrade sander is available in 950 RPM or 3,200 RPM models, or with a pneumatic wheel in a Dynabrade Versatility Kit.

Right Angle Denibber

If you need a Dynabrade sander to quickly deal with imperfections, the Right Angle Denibber is ideal. It is available in front or rear exhaust variants, and uses an orbital action to prevent obvious patterns. The Right Angle Denibber is easy to manoeuvre, enabling comfortable, convenient and accurate work. A sanding pad is included with each version.
